Lets look at a team nobody has looked at this year, the San Francisco Giants and Drew Smyly 3.94ERA on the mound.
Smyly gave up three runs on four hits and a walk and struck out eight over 3.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Wednesday.
Smyly threw 51 of 78 pitches for strikes in a solid but short performance. The southpaw has a 3.94 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 27 strikeouts across 16 innings this season. Smyly still hasn’t pitched more than four innings in any of his five appearances. Now He hasnt gone deep any any games this year (4 innings to be exact) but he is throwing real stuff as of late. Enough that his last outting he struck out eight….. in 4 innings! The time before that versus San Diego….. 8 in 4 innings! The time before that versus Texas, 7 in 4 innings! Hello!!!!! This dude found something in his pitch or arm that is throwing batters off. His fast ball is up 3 mph from last year. Listen to this, 15.19 strikeouts per 9 innings. GET OUT OF HERE! Ok, I digress.
The Rockies are playing for their jobs and the Giants are fighting for a playoff spot and I suspect the Giants are the hungrier team and that will lead them to victory. They hit lefties well and have a solid pitching staff that should be able to handle the Rockies bats. The Giants bullpen is the better of the two and I will take the Giants to beat the Rockies.
Prediction: Giants ML -157
Also with all that geeking out over Smyly’s stats we gotta take that Over total strikeouts for the 31 year old veteran. My hope is that the Giants realize this too and feel that they need to win to keep that Wild Card hope alive.
Over 5.5 Drew Smyly -104
